Celebrating Black History Month With Our Early Learners at Chesterbrook Academy Audubon

Chesterbrook Academy Celebrates Black History MonthDownload

Black History Month, celebrated annually during February in the United States and Canada, is a month to recognize, celebrate, and remember the achievements, culture, and history of BlPOC communities. This month is also a meaningful opportunity for parents, educators, and other caregivers to introduce stories, conversations, and experiences that celebrate Black voices, culture, and contributions with our little learners.

In our classrooms, teachers will thoughtfully acknowledge Black History Month through books, music, and conversations that support inclusion and belonging. We also recognize that learning continues far beyond the school day. The ideas and resources below are intended to support families who would like to continue these conversations and explorations at home in ways that fit your family’s values, routines, and comfort level.

Below are family friendly ideas and trusted resources to help you explore Black History Month with infants, toddlers, and preschoolers:

Reading Together

Reading is one of the easiest and most impactful ways to introduce young children to diverse stories and role models. Look for books that highlight Black leaders, families, and everyday experiences. A few wonderful options include:

  • I Am Antiracist Superhero by Jennifer Bacon
  • Hidden Figures by Margot Lee Shetterly
  • Before She Was Harriet by Lesa Cline-Ransome
  • Child of the Civil Rights Movement by Paula Young Shelton

When reading together, follow your child’s lead. Pause to look at illustrations, ask simple questions, or talk about feelings and fairness in ways that make sense for their age.

Exploring Through Play & Creativity

Young children learn best through hands on experiences. At home, you might:

  • Create art using a variety of colors and materials
  • Encourage self portraits and family drawings
  • Listen to and move along with music by Black artists

These playful moments help children celebrate individuality and creativity while building cultural awareness.

Helpful Resources for Families

We encourage families to explore these trusted resources for ideas, book lists, videos, and simple activities:

Why This Matters

Children begin forming ideas about themselves and others at a very young age. By sharing diverse stories and experiences at home, families help children develop kindness, respect, and an understanding that everyone’s story matters.

Thank you for partnering with us in creating a community that values inclusion, curiosity, and care for one another!
